貝莉珍妮安今日（11月11日）向澳洲廣播公司表示，現在是時候認同原住民在這大陸的6萬年歷史，「我感受到原住民不覺得國歌不反映他們和他們的歷史。我覺得如果我們說『我們一體且自由』的話，便承認我們在這大陸上並不那麼年輕。人類已居民住數以萬年。」
她又說，澳洲國歌已非第一次修改，例如第一句便由「澳洲之子，讓我們歡笑吧」改為「澳洲人，讓我們歡笑吧」。
貝莉珍妮安並非首個自由黨議員推動修改國歌。去年，保守派議員凱利（Craig Kelly）建議將「年輕且自由」改為「堅強且自由」。
貝莉珍妮安說：「在澳洲原住民、我們的第一民族身上，我們擁有這大陸上最長久的活文化。」
不過，她承認這個「微小姿態」對很多原住民和島民來說並不足夠，「我認為現在是時候開始，在我們所有代表我們自己的國家象徵和國家途徑上承認這事。」
不過，昨日聯邦政府否決了在「原住民及島民周」（Naidoc Week）期間，參議院會議廳懸掛原住民旗的動議。
聯邦社會服務部長拉斯頓（Anne Ruston）認為，已經有很多地方可以展示原住民旗，「我們認為代表所有澳洲人的澳洲國旗，是唯一合適的旗幟掛在參議院會議廳。」
