Classic American burger

What defines a classic American burger? Make it grilled, make sure there are mustard and pickles, and do not forget the cheese and bacon.

Ingredients

  • 4 beef patties
  • 4 bacon slices
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 4–8 slices cheddar cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns, split
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 4 slices tomato, sliced
  • 4 pickles, sliced
  • 2 tbsp mustard
  • ⅓ cup mayonnaise

Instructions

  1. Preheat a barbecue grill on medium heat. Cook beef patties for 10–15 minutes, turning once. Cook bacon for 5 minutes, turning once. Cook onion for 5–10 minutes, stirring.
  2. Place cheese slices on burger patties and cook for 1 minute, or until melted.
  3. Toast burger buns on grill for 1–2 minutes, or until light golden.
  4. Stack patties, bacon, onion on burger bun bases. Top with lettuce, tomato and pickles. Add mustard and mayonnaise. Top with bun lids. Serve.

Oven temperatures are for conventional; if using fan-forced (convection), reduce the temperature by 20˚C. | We use Australian tablespoons and cups: 1 teaspoon equals 5 ml; 1 tablespoon equals 20 ml; 1 cup equals 250 ml. | All herbs are fresh (unless specified) and cups are lightly packed. | All vegetables are medium size and peeled, unless specified. | All eggs are 55-60 g, unless specified.
