Over on the island of Maui in Hawaii, there’s a garden bungalow that Jimi Hendrix reportedly once checked into during the 70s while filming Rainbow Ridge. Celebrity ties aside, it’s located on 1.8 hectares of lush gardens and farmland with tropical fruit trees and wildlife in abundance.
Nestled deep within private woods, this fairytale wooden house is set in a wild forest near Aperdoorn in the heart of the Netherlands. It’s on a quiet lane with access to a golf course opposite it and comes with an adjoining shed that sleeps an additional two (the main house sleeps five). The roof and windows of this Spanish villa look like meringue frosting but sadly, aren’t edible. Situated in the Canary Islands, it’s a stone’s throw away from all those gorgeous white-sand beaches.
If elbow room isn’t an issue then this is the holiday house for you. Complete with stained glass windows fitted with LED lights (they kind of look like eyes) this teeny weeny gingerbread-coloured cottage is located in the Isis Oasis Retreat Centre, which just so happens to be a wine region packed full of beautiful old earthen trees and plenty of wildlife. Need more incentives? There’s a wood-fired oven and picnic table outside, plus a pool, sauna and hot tub within walking distance.

5. Okemo A-Frame in Ludlow, VT, US
It’s the authentic shape and yellow and red trimming that makes this cosy wood cabin so inviting and gingerbread-like. Inside you’ll find a wood-burning fireplace and the front veranda features a ramp for easy ski/board access to snow trails come winter.
